Cape Mentelle Shiraz 2007

  • Region Margaret River, WA
  • Type Red
  • Size 750ml
  • Alcohol 14%
The Margaret River is famous for its Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends, but after tasting a number of excellent Shiraz from the region I wonder how long before this variety gets added to the list. The 2007 Cape Mentelle is a knockout. Enjoy it now or let it develop further complexity in the cellar. -JP

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
 says:

Medium-bodied but with great depth of flavour. Notes of pepper, choc-licorice, blueberry and high-quality, spicy French oak. Its tannins are peppery, but everything here is ripe, solid and highly polished. Fabulous wine.

James Halliday, The Wine Companion
 says:

Dense crimson-purple; spicy fruit aromas on the bouquet, then a voluptuous palate with multiple flavours of spice, licorice and both red and black fruits; exemplary oak and tannin support.

Nick Stock, Penguin Fine Wine Guide
 says:

Some tarry, savoury nuances here, gentle regional roasting herbs. It's almost itallianette in its brooding, dark, aromatic intensity - this is a wine to be reckoned with. The palate begins with dark chocolate before deep, dark plum flavours sweep through amid chewy, earthy tannins; oak spice chimes in through the finish. Plenty of future.
