Castagna Genesis Syrah 2005

  • Region Beechworth, VIC
  • Type Red
  • Size 750ml
  • Alcohol 14%
Castagna is at the forefront of the biodynamic vineyard movement in Australia, and this is their flagship wine. Musty and laced with stone-fruit, this is a deep Syrah showing nervy, peppermint-infused, forest floor aromas. Interestingly, it has raspberry edges and a centre that threatens to be meaty. But this backs off to Christmas cake on the nose, complete with brandied green raisins and spirit-sodden sponge. Faintly clingy tannins preserve an essence of warm winter berries, subtly sweetened by vanilla and charming hints of creamy orange. Very long and lit with keen acid, its late suggestions of mocha are encased with petulant fruit of unyielding energy and potent fruitiness. - NT

 says:

Here’s a very ripe, finely crafted and deeply flavoured shiraz from one of Beechworth’s key makers. Sporting more overt ripeness than previous vintages, but retaining that all-important length of vibrant fruit flavour, it manages to avoid over-cooked influences. Its heady, spicy aromas of black pepper, dark plums, cassis and blackberries integrated nearly with mocha-like oak and meaty, forest floor undertones. Dark and briary, it’s firm, fine-grained and powdery, delivering an excellent length of sour-edged fruit and a hint of minerality that culminate in a long, savoury finish.
