Sutton Grange Syrah 2006

  • Region Bendigo, VIC
  • Type Red
  • Size 750ml
  • Alcohol 14%
A poised, brooding Syrah that opens with lacquered blue and blackberries and eventually fades with cocoa-dusted tannins that are unapologetic and biscuity. A glamorous, Sangiovese-like middle of aniseed, liquorish, black pepper and sour cherries gives this wine an Italian soul, as does the powdery, food-wanting mouth-feel and lively, Piedmont-like, forest-leaf acidity. A stubbornly ‘natural’ product that speaks of its agricultural essence, with a satisfying, truthful mustiness and a seriously drawn-out, savoury herbal finish. Throws a hell of a crust for its relatively modest age and is perhaps but a meek preview of its very cellarable self. - NT

 says:

Complex, savoury and powerful, with dark, meaty and slightly herbal-edged fruit framed by a firm, powdery extract of drying tannin. It’s dusty bouquet of blackberries, dark plums and slightly herbal whole bunch characters reveals a hint of Bovril, while its earthy palate of dark red and black berry flavours overlies and assertive meaty, leathery presence. It’s long and savoury, with drive and balance.

 says:

Good concentration of dark fruit, with a distinct leathery, savoury edge to the bouquet; the palate is quite firm and dry, with plenty of volume and a hint of bay leaf on the finish.
