The Story Rice's Vineyard Shiraz 2008

  • Region Grampians, VIC
  • Type Red
  • Size 750ml
  • Alcohol 14.5%
The Rice's Vineyard is in a slightly warmer section of the Grampians, but the cool climate regionality and spice is still expressed clearly in this excellent example of Shiraz from the area. Fresh blackberries, red fruit, rich dark chocolate and pepper blend harmoniously on the palate. Sound simple? Well there's 30-40% whole bunches adding wildness, a hint of stalk and extra structure. The acidity is faultless. Prominent tannins are present, but they are aided by fine grained French oak of the highest order. It's a superb wine and with only 50 cases produced I'd suggest you get in fast. -JP

James Halliday, the Wine Companion
 says:

Strong crimson; the aromatic bouquet promises the spicy black fruits which duly appear in a tapestry of flavours and textures on the medium-bodied palate, which has remarkable finesse.

Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
 says:

It’s fragrant and perfumed with juicy mixed berry fruits, spice and delightful cocoa and vanilla oak. Smooth and mouth-filling with abundant sweet fruit, spice and sumptuous suede-like tannins. The acidity is fresh, but unobtrusive, just enough to pull in the waist of all that fleshy ripe fruit, but discreetly. Pulsating length, closing with spice, and a firm, but ripely stalky aftertaste. Touch and go for an even higher rating. Superb.
