Heggies Vineyard
Heggies Vineyard creates wines with distinctive flavour profiles. The only way to explain the combination of elements that generate these characteristics is to use a very Old World term - terroir.
Heggies Vineyard is situated in the Eden Valley, South Australia. At 550m above sea level, the 62ha under vines is one of Australia’s highest altitude vineyards and also one of the coolest. The land - a thin layer of grey sandy loam over clay and decomposed rock - had been used for grazing for most of its settled history. It was owned by local grazier and bushman, Colin Heggie, before being purchased by Wyndham Hill Smith, a friend since school days, the then Manager of the Yalumba Wine Company.
Planting began in 1971 on the tough North Eastern corner of the property and the first wine was released in 1979. It was the first wine to bear the iconic label that is still used today - Colin Heggie, the bushman, looking out over the fledgling Heggies plantings astride his faithful chestnut, Jack.
Darrell Kruger (viticulturalist) and Peter Gambetta (winemaker) follow a minimumal intervention approach to their winemaking. This ensures Heggies wines are distinctive and truly individual. Of course, all of that relies on the fantastic fruit being plucked from the vines each season. Working with the natural advantage rather than against it, they take every factor into consideration including the micro-climates within the vineyard, the hillside aspect and even the soil type. Each grape variety has its own program of care according to its position in the vineyard. Such a tailored vineyard management program really is the only way a winemaker can ensure that their wines will develop true character and personality.
"I feel privileged to have been entrusted with the stewardship of Heggies Vineyard - one of the most prestigious single vineyards in Eden Valley and possibly Australia. Darrell Kruger and I work together ensuring we have the best fruit in Eden Valley." – Peter Gambetta Winemaker
Heggies flagship wine is their chardonnay – they produce both a standard and reserve version.
Many Heggies Vineyard wines have been rated over 90 points by James Halliday. The winery has a 5 star rating in the 2011 Wine Companion and their Reserve 242 Botrytis Riesling received a very high 96 points.
